How to redact PDF

    Open the sensitive file

    Drop the PDF you need to redact, up to 200 MB, into the tool. If it is encrypted, supply the password so the pages can be shown.

    Mark what to remove

    Drag over any text, photo, signature or number you want gone. Each area turns into a black box, and the counter below the preview shows how many areas are marked across how many pages.

    Review every page

    Step through the document with the Previous page and Next page arrows. Drag or resize boxes to cover things fully, and remove any box you drew by mistake.

    Apply the redaction

    Press Redact PDF. Each page with a box is rebuilt as an image with the black areas burned in, so nothing underneath survives.

    Save the redacted copy with Download. Open it and try selecting text on a redacted page to confirm the content is truly gone.

Redact PDF content the right way

Sharing a document often means hiding part of it first. Court filings contain personal identifiers, contracts show pricing that should stay internal, HR files hold salaries, and medical letters include diagnoses that only the patient should see. A proper redaction removes that content for real, so the recipient cannot recover it by copying, searching or peeling back a layer.

This tool lets you draw black boxes directly on a preview of each page. When you apply the redaction, every page with at least one box is re-rendered as a picture, and the boxes are painted into the pixels. The text, vector graphics and embedded images that were under them are not carried over in any form.

Why pages become images

Cosmetic redaction is a well-known trap. Drawing a black shape or highlight over text with an annotation tool usually leaves the original characters in the file where anyone can extract them. Flattening each redacted page into an image is a blunt but dependable fix, because an image has no hidden text layer to leak.

The trade-off deserves a clear mention. On redacted pages, all text becomes part of the image, so it can no longer be selected, copied or found with search, even outside the boxes. Such pages may also be slightly larger or softer than the original. Pages with no redaction boxes are copied unchanged, so a long document keeps normal text everywhere except where you marked something. If you need searchable pages afterward, OCR PDF can recognize the remaining visible text.

Redaction without handing over the original

Uploading an unredacted file to a web service to redact it defeats much of the purpose. Here, the original is opened and processed only on your own device. The page previews, the boxes you draw and the final rendering all happen in browser memory, and no copy of the uncensored document is transmitted, cached or stored remotely.

A careful redaction checklist

  • Cover generously. Extend boxes a little beyond the text so descenders and neighboring characters are hidden too.
  • Search for repeats. Names and account numbers often appear several times, including in headers, footers and footnotes.
  • Check images and signatures. Photos, stamps and scanned signatures can reveal as much as text.
  • Verify the output. Open the downloaded file and try to select or search the redacted words.

Pages are not the only place information hides. Remove metadata strips author names, software details and other document properties. How do I permanently redact a PDF for free?

Why is drawing a black rectangle over text not enough?

A shape drawn on top of a page usually leaves the original text in the file. Anyone can copy it out, search for it or delete the shape. Proper redaction removes the underlying data, which is what this tool does.

Why can I no longer select text on redacted pages?

To guarantee nothing survives under the boxes, redacted pages are converted into images. That removes selectable text across the whole page, not only the blacked-out parts. Pages without any boxes stay exactly as they were.

Can I make the redacted pages searchable again?

Yes. Run the redacted file through OCR PDF to add a new text layer based on what is visible. The blacked-out areas contain no text, so they stay empty.

Does the redacted PDF still contain metadata?

Document properties such as author or title are separate from page content. Use Remove metadata after redacting if those details could also reveal something.

Is it safe to redact confidential documents online here?

The redaction runs locally in your browser, and the original file is not sent to any server. Your unredacted document never exists anywhere except on your own device.

Can I undo a redaction after downloading?

No, and that is the point. The content is removed from the redacted copy for good. Keep your original file somewhere safe if you might need it later.
