How to compress a PDF to 1 MB

  1. 1

    Load the file

Pick your PDF or drop it here. Your browser opens it locally; nothing is transferred to us.

  2. 2

Check that Under 1 MB is selected

This page presets the target to 1 MB. The Compression level underneath sets the best quality the tool will try first.

  3. 3

    Compress and keep the copy

Click Compress PDF. When the new size appears, download the file and upload it wherever it needs to go.

A very common upload cap

A 1 MB limit is everywhere: job applications, visa and consular forms, school admissions, benefit claims and online banking messages. It is a round number that keeps servers and email relays comfortable while leaving enough room for a readable multi-page scan. If a form does not say, 1 MB is a safe guess for what it will accept.

How the tool reaches 1 MB

With a target in place, compression becomes a search. The tool first tries your chosen Compression level, Balanced by default. If that result is already under 1 MB, you get it straight away, with the best image quality. If not, it runs a few more passes at lower image quality and resolution and keeps the highest-quality version that fits.

Only photos and scanned images are rewritten. Text stays crisp and searchable, and links, bookmarks and form fields remain in place.

What to expect

A phone photo of a document can easily be several megabytes by itself. Once placed in a PDF and compressed, several such pages usually fit under 1 MB. A long scanned contract can fit too, with somewhat softer images. A slide deck or brochure exported with many high-resolution photos may need the 2 MB page or a split.

If the file is still too big

  • Remove pages the recipient does not need with Delete pages.
  • Convert color scans of plain paperwork with Grayscale PDF.
  • Split a long document with Split PDF and upload the parts.

For stricter forms, compress to 500 KB instead. Working with an upload portal that states its limit? The upload forms page covers the usual pitfalls.

Your PDF never leaves this device. There is no account, no watermark and no daily cap.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 MB here 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB?

Sizes on this site use binary units, so 1 MB is 1,024 KB, or 1,048,576 bytes. Some portals count 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes. If yours rejects a file that looks just under the limit, set a Custom target of 950 KB.

Will a 1 MB PDF still look good?

For most scans and photo documents, yes. A 1 MB budget usually leaves images at a resolution that reads well on screen and prints acceptably.

Why did my PDF stay above 1 MB?

The tool only recompresses images. If the size comes from embedded fonts, vector drawings or images stored in other formats, the saving is small and you will see Target not reached.

Can I compress several files to 1 MB each?

One file per run. Compress them one after another, or combine them with Merge PDF first if the form wants a single document.
